Appearence

The Maltichon is a small dog, typically weighing between six and twelve pounds. They have a white or cream-colored coat that is soft and silky. They have a round head, button nose, and dark eyes. Their ears are either cropped or left natural, depending on the individual dog’s preference.

Temperament

The Maltichon is a friendly and affectionate dog that loves to be around people. They make great companions for both children and adults. They are also good dogs for apartment living, as they do not need a lot of exercise. However, like all dogs, they still need daily walks to stay healthy and happy.

Health

  • Maltichons are prone to Cushing disease, a hormonal disorder that results from an over-production of the hormone cortisol. Symptoms can include hair loss, weight gain, a poor coat, and skin problems. Treatment usually involves medication to lower cortisol levels. If left untreated, Cushing disease can lead to liver failure and death.
  • Patellar luxation is another relatively common problem in Maltichons. It is a condition in which the kneecap (patella) pops out of its normal position. This can cause pain and joint instability. It may be present at birth, or it may develop later in life. It can occur in one or both knees. Patellar luxation can cause pain and joint instability. In some cases, the kneecap may pop out only once and then go back into place on its own. In other cases, the kneecap pops out repeatedly and requires surgery to fix it in place. The degree of pain and instability caused by patellar luxation varies from dog to dog. Some dogs experience only minor problems, while others may be unable to walk without significant pain. Dogs with patellar luxation should not be bred, as the condition is inherited.
  • Maltichons are also prone to a congenital heart defect called patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). This occurs when the ductus arteriosus, a small blood vessel that normally closes shortly after birth, fails to close properly. As a result, blood flows between the left and right ventricles of the heart, instead of flowing through the lungs. This can cause the heart to work harder than it should, leading to Congestive Heart Failure (CHF). Signs of PDA in Maltichons include shortness of breath, rapid breathing, and a swollen abdomen. Treatment for PDA includes surgery to close the ductus arteriosus, or medications such as digoxin or diuretics to help the heart work more efficiently. With treatment, most Maltichons with PDA can live long and healthy lives.

Care

Activity

Maltichon isn’t a very active dog, so they don’t need a lot of exercise. A short walk once or twice a day is plenty.

Grooming

Maltichons are low-shedding dogs, but they do need to be groomed regularly. Brush their coat at least once a week to keep it looking healthy and shiny. You may also need to trim their nails and clean their ears on a regular basis.

Breeding

If you’re looking for a Maltichon puppy, be sure to find a reputable breeder who can provide you with health clearances for both the Maltese and Bichon Frise parents. This will help ensure that your puppy is healthy and free of genetic diseases. Health clearances are not required for Maltichons in the United States, but they are a good idea if you want to be sure of your dog’s health.

History

The Maltichon is a mix between the Maltese and Bichon Frise. They are often called a “designer dog” because they were bred intentionally, rather than being a result of natural breeding. The first Maltichon was created in the early 1980s by crossing a purebred Maltese with a purebred Bichon Frise. The goal was to create a dog that had the best of both breeds – the Maltese’s gentle disposition and the Bichon Frise’s outgoing personality.

Maltese

The Maltese is a small breed of dog that is thought to have originated in the Mediterranean region by crossing small dogs of the Spaniel type with the ancient dog breed, the Phoenician. The Maltese was first brought to England in the early 1800s and became a popular pet among British royals. The breed was later imported to the United States where it became a favorite among Americans as well. Today, the Maltese is a popular pet and show dog due to its beautiful long white coat, sweet temperament, and small size. The Maltese is considered a toy dog and typically weighs between 4 and 7 pounds.

Bichon Frise

The Bichon Frise is a small, fluffy dog that has a history dating back to the fourteenth century. They are believed to have been bred in the Mediterranean region, and were popular among French nobility. The Bichon Frise’s name is a combination of two French words: “bichon,” meaning “small dog,” and “frise,” meaning “curly.” This reflects the breed’s characteristic white curly coat of hair, which requires regular brushing to keep it looking its best. Bichon Frises make good family pets, and are suitable for both urban and rural living. They typically weigh between 10 and 12 pounds, and stand about 10 inches tall at the shoulder.
