Appearance

The bassetoodle is a small-sized breed. They have the long, droopy ears of a basset hound, as well as the characteristic wagging tail and long body. Bassetoodle coats can be black, brown, white, or a combination of these colors. They may also have spots, which is a characteristic of the poodle. Bassetoodles can be groomed to either resemble a basset hound or a poodle, depending on your preference.

Personality and Temperament

Bassetoodles are typically friendly and outgoing dogs that love spending time with their family. They are great with children and get along well with other pets. Bassetoodles are intelligent dogs that are easy to train. When it comes to barking, these dogs will bark when someone comes to the door, but they are not considered to be yappy dogs. Their bark sounds more like a low “woof”.

Health Problems

Like all breeds, bassetoodles are prone to certain health conditions. Some of the most common health problems include eye problems such as cherry eye, ear infections and epilepsy. Bassetoodles can also suffer from separation anxiety if they are left alone for too long. It is important to take your bassetoodle to the vet for regular check-ups and to keep up with their vaccinations.

Cherry Eye

Cherry eye is a condition common in bassetoodles and other breeds of dogs that have protruding eyes. The condition is caused when the gland that produces tears, called the lacrimal gland, becomes displaced and pops out of the eye socket. This causes the dog to produce excessive amounts of tears, which can lead to infection and even blindness if left untreated. Some common symptoms of cherry eye include excessive tearing, inflammation and redness around the eye, and discharge from the eye. Treatment is typically very simple and can be performed in a matter of minutes: the gland is simply popped back into place and the dog’s eye is cleaned and treated for any infection. If surgery is required, it can typically be performed on an outpatient basis with minimal anesthesia. Following surgery, your bassetoodle will likely need to wear a cone around his or her head to prevent him or her from rubbing the eye.

Ear Infections

Ear infections are another common health problem in bassetoodles. They can be caused by a variety of factors, including parasites, allergies, and yeast overgrowth. Symptoms of an ear infection include inflammation, discharge, and pain. If left untreated, an ear infection can lead to hearing loss. If your bassetoodle has an ear infection, you will need to take him to the veterinarian for treatment. The veterinarian may prescribe antibiotics or anti-inflammatory medication. He may also recommend treating the underlying cause of the infection.

Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that causes seizures in dogs. Bassetoodles are particularly prone to epilepsy, and seizures can occur at any age. Seizures can be mild or severe, and may cause the dog to lose consciousness, have muscle spasms, or urinate or defecate on themselves. There is no known cure for epilepsy, but dogs can be treated with medication to help control seizures. If your bassetoodle has a seizure, stay calm and call your veterinarian. Seizures are not typically life-threatening, but it is important to get your dog the help they need.

Care Requirements

Physical and mental activity is important for all dogs, and the bassetoodle is no exception. This breed needs at least an hour of exercise each day. A long walk or a game of fetch will do the trick.

Bassetoodles also need regular brushing to keep their coat healthy and free of mats. They should be bathed only when necessary, as over bathing can strip their coat of its natural oils. Due to their ears being droopy, these dogs should have their ears cleaned regularly to prevent infection. Their nails should be trimmed every few weeks, and their teeth brushed at least once a day.

History

The bassetoodle is a relatively new breed that was first bred in the early 2000s in the United States. Breeders were looking for a dog that would combine the best of both the basset hound and poodle, and they hit on a winner with the bassetoodle dog!

Basset Hound

The basset hound is a breed of dog that is characterized by its short legs, wrinkled face, droopy ears and large eyes with a “sad” look to them. This breed is believed to have originated in France, where it was used as a hunting dog. Basset hounds are typically gentle and good-natured, and make excellent family pets. They are also known for their amazing sense of smell, which makes them ideal for tracking and hunting purposes. Their coats are long and smooth and come in a wide variety of colors, including black, tan, red and white. They typically weigh between 30 and 50 pounds and stand about 12 inches tall at the shoulder.

Poodle

They are believed to have originated in Germany, and were used as hunting dogs thanks to their ability to retrieve game from water, as well as their high intelligence and trainability. That’s why they’re also one of the few breeds that can be successfully trained to perform acrobatic tricks. They are known for its thick curly hair that comes in a variety of colors, but the most common are black, white, and apricot. Poodles typically have long ears and a long tail. They range in size from about 15 inches to over 22 inches at the shoulder. Most poodles are groomed to have a very short haircut, which gives them their distinctive look.

For Whom?

The bassetoodle is a low-maintenance dog that doesn’t require a lot of exercise, making it a good fit for people who lead busy lives. However, they do need regular brushing and occasional baths to keep their coat looking healthy and shiny. Bassetoodles are also known to be droolers, so you’ll need to be prepared for wet kisses and slobbery messes.
