Temperament

The Belgian Tervuren is a breed of dog that is known for its intelligence, alertness, and protectiveness. They are considered to be a very versatile breed and can make great guard dogs, show dogs or good family pets as they are very friendly and loving towards both children and other animals. Tervs are considered to be loyal and protective of their family and home, and make good watchdogs, too.

However, they can be a bit high-maintenance when it comes to grooming and exercise needs, so be sure you are up for the challenge before bringing one of these dogs into your home!

Bark

Belgian tervurens have a unique bark that is often described as sounding like a yodel. Some owners even describe it as sounding like a mix of a dog’s bark and a human’s whistle. Their bark is loud and clear, making them great watchdog dogs.

Health

Belgian Tervurens are a healthy breed of dog. They have a life expectancy of 12-14 years, and are prone to few health problems. Some common health issues include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and canine cancer.

Hip Dysplasia

This common developmental disorder of the hip joint can cause lameness and arthritis. The condition is present at birth, but may not be detected until later in life. Belgian Tervurens are particularly prone to hip dysplasia, due to their large body size and deep chest. Symptoms of the disorder include difficulty rising after lying down, reluctance to exercise, and stiffness in the hindquarters. Hip dysplasia can be diagnosed with a physical exam and confirmed with an x-ray. Treatment options include pain relief medications, surgery, and physical therapy. Some dogs require lifelong treatment for hip dysplasia, while others only need occasional care.

Elbow Dysplasia

Elbow dysplasia is a condition that affects the elbow joint in dogs. It can cause pain, swelling and inflammation in the joint, and can eventually lead to arthritis. Belgian Tervurens are particularly prone to elbow dysplasia, so it’s important to be aware of the signs and seek treatment if your dog starts showing any symptoms. Treatment for elbow dysplasia usually includes rest, medication and in some cases, surgery. By getting your dog treated early, you can help prevent him from developing arthritis and keep him comfortable and pain-free.

Cancer

Belgian Tervurens are a breed of dog that is particularly prone to cancer. In fact, it is estimated that nearly half of all Belgian Tervurens will develop some form of cancer in their lifetime. The most common types of cancer seen in these dogs include lymphoma, mast cell tumors, and hemangiosarcoma, a type of cancer that arises from the cells lining blood vessels. Hemangiosarcoma is often fatal, and there is no known cure.

Maintenance

Belgian Tervurens need a fair amount of care, such as exercise and grooming, to stay healthy and happy.

Physical Activity

Belgian Tervurens need a significant amount of activity. They are best suited for people who enjoy participating in outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, and running. However, they can also adapt to living in an urban environment as long as they receive enough exercise. Belgian Tervurens should not be kept as strictly indoor dogs because they need to have some opportunity to run and play. They are not recommended for people who lead a sedentary lifestyle because they will become bored and restless.

Mental Activity

Remember to keep your Terv mentally stimulated. Belgian Tervurens are intelligent dogs, and they need plenty of stimulation to keep their minds active. Provide them with puzzle toys, chew toys, and other things to keep them entertained. Dog sports can also help to keep their minds busy. You may try teaching your dog agility, a sport in which dogs navigate an obstacle course under the guidance of their owners. Rally obedience is a type of obedience competition that is judged on how well the dog and handler team completes a series of simple exercises, rather than on the dog’s ability to follow specific commands.

Grooming

When it comes to grooming, Belgiuan Tervurens can be a little high-maintenance. They should be brushed regularly to remove dead hair and minimze shedding, and their nails should be trimmed frequently. Belgian Tervurens also require occasional bathing and ear cleaning. In addition, they will need to be professionally groomed at least once a year to keep their coat looking its best.

Training

The Belgian Tervuren is bred for their hunting abilities and as such, they need to be well-trained in order to be effective. This can be done with basic obedience commands, as well as with tricks or agility training. Belgian Tervurens also need plenty of socialization so that they are comfortable around people and other animals. Make sure to take them to dog parks, pet stores, and other places where they can meet new friends.

Cost

Belgian Tervuren puppies typically cost around $800-$1000 to purchase from a breeder, and additional costs for food, vet care and other supplies can add up to another $500-$600 per year. So before you decide to bring a Belgian Tervuren into your home, be sure you are prepared to commit to providing them with the care they need!

History

Then

In the early 1800s, in the small Belgian region of Tervuren, a master breeder by the name of M.F. Corbeel began to selectively breed his dogs – the German Shepherd Dog and the Schapendoes – for qualities he found desirable. He wanted dogs that were both intelligent and able to work hard all day long. The breeds that resulted from his breeding efforts were four varieties of Belgian Sheepdogs, known as the Belgian Malinois, the Laekenois, the Groenendael, and the Belgian Tervuren. Known in Belgium as Chien de Berger Belge, Tervs were bred as working dogs, and were used to herd sheep and cattle, as well as protect the flock from predators. The breed was officially registered in the Belgian Kennel Club in 1910.
