Ori Pei – Appearance and Size
The Ori Pei is a small to medium-sized dog that can range anywhere from 15 to 30 pounds and 12-15 inches in height. They have a thick, short coat that can be either white, gray, black, brown, or cream-colored with areas of brindle.
The most distinguishing feature of the Ori Pei is their wrinkled skin, which is a result of the Shar-Pei influence. With their floppy ears and wrinkly foreheads, they look forever sad, scared, or shy. Don’t let that fool you – they’re as cheerful as the next dog!

These dogs are intelligent, loyal, and loving pets that enjoy nothing more than being with their family. They are outgoing and thrive on human companionship, making them the perfect couch potato buddy.

Ori Pei – Health Issues
The good news is that the Ori Pei is a relatively healthy breed with few health problems. In fact, one of the aims of its original breeder was to produce dogs healthier than the Shar-Pei. However, they may still inherit some issues from their parent breeds. Look out for:
- patellar luxation,
- Legg-Calve Perthes Disease,
- epilepsy,
- eye problems,
- OCD.
Ori Peis can live anywhere from 12 to 15 years. To make sure your dog has a long and healthy life, get them from a reputable source and take them for regular checkups.
Ori Pei – Grooming Needs
The Ori Pei is a low-maintenance dog when it comes to grooming. Their short coat doesn’t require much more than an occasional brushing to remove loose hair. However, their wrinkled skin does need special care to prevent infection. Clean their wrinkles a few times a week with a damp cloth and make sure they’re dry before letting them out for a walk.
Clip their nails when they start clicking on the floor, and brush their teeth at least 2-3 times a week. To prevent ear infections, check their ears daily and clean them as needed.
Breeding and Pricing of Ori Pei Puppies
If you’re looking for an Ori Pei puppy, be prepared to pay anywhere from $600 to $2000. The price depends on the breeder and the dog’s parentage. When choosing a source, make sure they are reputable and have healthy dogs. Avoid breeders that can’t answer all your questions or provide proof of the parent dogs’ genetic testing.
The Ori-Pei is typically a first generation puppy of one Shar Pei and one Pug parent. At least 6 generations of this hybrid have been bred so far, so you may also be able to find back-crosses or puppies coming from two Ori Pei parents.
History of the Shar-Pei Pug Mix
The mix is relatively new, having been first bred in the 1970s. The original breeder, Aaron Silver, set out to create a smaller, healthier Shar-Pei by crossbreeding them with Pugs. This resulted in the oriental-looking dog we know and love today.
While the exact origins of the Shar-Pei are unknown, they are believed to have originated in China. They were used as hunting dogs and guardians of property. The Pug also has a long history, dating back to the Han Dynasty in China. They were bred as companions for Chinese emperors and nobles.
The Shar-Pei and Pug were both brought to the United States in the 1970s, and it wasn’t long before someone decided to breed them together. The Ori-Pei was born!
Who Is This Dog Breed Suitable for?
The Pug Shar-Pei Mix is a great family dog, but they may not be the best choice for first-time dog owners. They need an owner who is firm and consistent with their training and who can provide them with plenty of love and attention. They aren’t recommended for families with small children, either, due to their tendency to snap when overexcited.
Otherwise, if you’re looking for a low-maintenance, lovable, and entertaining companion, the Ori Pei might be the perfect dog for you!
